Arson suspected cause of tire fire

Arson is suspected in a fire in a wooded area in Errington Wednesday.
John Marie, a volunteer firefighter from the Errington department, said he was on his way to respond to a hay fire at Silver Meadow Farms when he came across a black plume of smoke and pulled down Fairdowne Road to investigate.
What he found appeared to be a large tractor tire ablaze at the edge of the woods, with surrounding trees in the process of scorching.
Even as he phoned the fire in, a cement truck full of water arrived on scene from the nearby yard and, with the help of a hose and the driver, he was able to first prevent the blaze from spreading and then extinguish it, even as other members of the fire department arrived on scene.
"Can you believe it?"he asked as he fired a last squirt at the smouldering tire. "This whole area could have gone up. That's a big, wooded area back there."
The cause of the tire fire remains under investigation.
